In attempting to imitate the bent forms of three trees near my studio in Songjiang, Shanghai, I kept falling. In the video series Three Trees (2018), I am fascinated by their seemingly inexplicable unnaturalness—and by my continued failure to meet my own expectations during the mimicry.
Falling Practice
2019, 30mins, live performance at :: home :: Art Space, Shanghai
A continuation of the work Three Trees, this live performance features three performers who re-enact the process of mimicking trees, ultimately falling. Through this act, they establish a temporary relationship with the audience and the space. Falling is both the method and the objective—a mechanism to negotiate intimacy and interaction with the audience.
The work employs bodily language to explore states of hesitation, retreat, contest, and compromise: feelings that permeate individual experiences within the contemporary urban landscape.
