An Attempt to Connect 尝试连接

2021, 8mins

An Attempt to Connect is a performance work extracted from the working-in-progress sculpture work Disassembly Practice. The sculpture parts during the performance were made of plaster, paper mush, wire, PVA glue, resin, and silicone. By inserting the wire into the silicone tube, I completed the process of integrating sculpture parts from dispersed states into the whole.

In repetitive movements, the curvilinear material is gradually stacked on my shoulders and crotch, and my limbs are tangled with the limbs of the material. The hard and brittle plaster in the white part of the material limits the strength of the action, and also forms a bone outside my body; inserting the exposed wire into the soft elastic silicone tube indicates the completion of the step, but also the destruction of the sculpted limb. The whole performance process is like a kind of intense preparation, and the final "sculpture" also presents a turbulent posture after the body's absence.

This project is supported by Unfinished Camp 2021.

Disassembly Practice is completed after the performance work An Attempt to Connect. I split the hoisting sculpture and repaired the broken parts. At the same time, I added other scattered materials in the studio, such as steel wire, loose beads, plastic eggshells, silicone residue, etc.

The three groups of hoisting sculptures show the posture of stretching and gathering. It corresponds to three methods in different situations after disassembly: combing its structure, extending and repairing its limbs, and sorting and storing it. I expect to bring the participation of bodily labor back to the scene by installing sculptures in these three postures.
